Goals of the Website Redesign

We launched our current website in the fall of 2008. At that time our use of large, bold photography rotating on the homepage was original and powerful, but a quick survey of higher education sites today reveals that this has become commonplace. When it comes to websites, so much has changed in the past five years — the demise of Flash, the proliferation of smart phones, the growing popularity of tablets, responsive design, mobile sites, and mobile apps, to name just a few. In order to stand out in the crowded field of higher education, we need a web presence that is contemporary, bold and original. We want to convey — to prospective students, their families, to alumni, parents, and friends — the unique value of a Bucknell education and what it’s like to be part of the Bucknell community. We want prospective students to be able to look at our site and know, immediately, if Bucknell is the right fit for them, just as if they had set foot on campus. And we want our current students, faculty and staff to be able to showcase what they are doing, learning, and experiencing. Most of all we want our site to be memorable and for site visitors to have a satisfactory experience. We want viewers to find not only what they bare looking for, but to discover something new along the way.

We are in the early phases of this project and we are looking for inspiration. What great websites have you come across? Reply to this post with URLs of sites that you love. Inspiration can come from any industry.

Funny that you should recommend the University of Puget Sound as an example of a good site. Fastspot, the company that we have engaged for this project, designed the University of Puget Sound website as well!
